Dr. Wei is passionate about improving healthcare outcomes through innovative NLP applications and has expertise in table recognition, named entity recognition, and relation extraction. He has also developed multi-modal models for clinical documents and advanced text mining and generation techniques.

Liang-Chin Huang, PhD

Senior Data Scientist

Dr. Liang-Chin Huang is experienced in building knowledge graphs and developing the drug-repurposing framework as Senior Data Scientist at Melax Tech.

Dr. Liang-Chin Huang is Melax Tech's Senior Data Scientist. After earning his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the University of Georgia, Dr. Huang joined Melax Tech in March 2022. Before joining Melax Tech, Dr. Huang was a research scientist at UTHealth SBMI, where he was responsible for building a knowledge graph and developing a drug-repurposing framework for Alzheimer's disease. In 2021, Dr. Huang co-led the UTHealth SBMI's team across five different labs in a recent LitCoin NLP Challenge held by NASA and NCATS, where they won 2nd place! Xiaoyan Wang, PhD, FAMIA

Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Xiaoyan Wang serves as Melax Tech’s Chief Scientific Officer. As CSO, she focuses on translating scientific insights and health intelligence into partnerships and programs that improve healthcare outcomes for patients, providers, and researchers. Dr. Wang has spent two decades committed to driving innovations in healthcare AI modeling and transforming health care with data intelligence. She was most recently VP of Healthcare Analytics and Informatics and VP of Biopharma Solutions at Sema4 Mount Sinai Genomonic Inc, where she led the development of clinical evidence generation platforms and clinical research in oncology, immunology, cardiovascular, respiratory, and rare diseases. Before joining the biopharma industry, she was a faculty member and principal investigator at the University of Connecticut, UConn Health Center, and Mount Sinai Health Systems bridging research, health services, and teaching. She holds a BA in Biochemistry from Shandong University, a MA in Genetics from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics and NLP from Columbia University School of Medicine. Outside of work, Dr. Wang enjoys camping and hiking with her family and has visited close to 100 locations!

Jingcheng Du, PhD

Dr. Du serves as the Director of Natural Language Processing at Melax Tech, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at University of Texas Health School of Biomedical Informatics, additionally.

Dr. Du earned his Ph.D. in Medical Informatics from UTHealth, with research focusing on developing AI algorithms such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and knowledge graph for healthcare applications. Dr. Du has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, with first-authored papers accepted in leading medical and informatics journals, such as the Lancet HIV, JAMA Network Open, npj digital medicine, and JAMIA. When not working Dr. Du enjoys spending time with his lovely son and playing basketball with his friends.

Surabhi Datta, PhD

Senior NLP Scientist

Dr. Surabhi Datta is a Senior NLP Scientist at Melax Tech, where she designs new NLP methods to extract important information from unstructured biomedical and clinical data for healthcare applications.

Dr. Surabhi Datta is a Senior NLP Scientist at Melax Tech, where she conceptualizes and designs novel NLP methods to automatically capture clinically meaningful information hidden in unstructured biomedical and clinical data (e.g., radiology reports, clinical trial documents, etc.). Such structured representation of important and rich information in the text is critical to various healthcare applications, including deep phenotyping and cohort retrieval. Before joining Melax Tech in January 2023, Dr. Datta completed her Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth, Houston. Her dissertation focused on extracting spatial information from radiology reports to facilitate downstream clinical applications. Dr. Datta has publications at top informatics and computer science venues, such as the Journal of Biomedical Informatics and the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference. She also served as a Doctoral Fellow under the UTHealth BIG-TCR (Biomedical Informatics, Genomics, and Translational Cancer Research) Training Program funded by CPRIT (Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas). At Melax, Dr. Datta drives and conducts NLP modeling projects to cater to leading biotech companies and advance biomedical NLP research.

Dr. Kyeryoung Lee is an experienced clinical domain expert in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) field and serves as a Principal Scientist at Melax Tech.

Frank J. Manion, PhD, FAMIA

VP for Innovation

Dr. Frank J. Manion serves as the VP for Innovations at Melax Tech. With a wealth of experience in biomedical informatics support, Dr. Manion has held executive positions at two major NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers. He was previously the Chief Technology Officer and Deputy CIO at the Fox Chase Cancer Center and served as the Chief Informatics Officer at the Rogel Cancer Center of the University of Michigan. Dr. Manion's research focuses on the formal semantic representation of biomedical research and clinical data. Dr. Manion was a co-leader of the bioinformatics team that created the first two centimorgan genetic map of the human genome in the 1990s. Recently, he has been heavily involved in developing clinical trial systems and large-scale biorepositories. Dr. Manion's research focuses on the formal semantic representation of clinical and biomedical data. He has contributed to international ontology projects that deal with biobanking and the representation of informed consent for collecting biospecimens and data. Dr. Manion has served as a consultant for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) program, is a member of the editorial board for the journal JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics and is an active member of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and Cancer Informatics for Cancer Centers (CI4CC).
